I need to split a Time Entry 50% to one Client and 50% to another. How can I do this?
There are 3 ways to accomplish this:
- Template splitting 50% to the original entry and 50% to another Matter:
- When creating your Split Template, use the setting "Original Entry = Split"
- Allocate 50% to another matter in the Split Details. The remainder 50% will be placed on the original matter.
Template splitting 50% to 2 different matters and deleting the original entry:
- When creating your Split Template, use the setting "Original Entry = Delete"
- Allocate 50% to 2 different matters in the Split Details.
Template splitting 50% to 2 different matters and retaining the original entry:
- When creating your Split Template, use the setting "Original Entry = Split"
- Allocate 50% to 2 different matters in the Split Details. This will leave no remainder for the original entry.
I need to split a Time Entry to 3 different Matters, but each Matter has different rates. Is this possible?
Yes, when establishing the template, make sure to set "Rate = Fee Schedule". This will cause the system to select the appropriate rate for each split-to time entry based on the fee schedule assigned to the Matter, instead of using the rate from the original entry.
I have a Client whose insurance company has agreed to pay 30% of all hours Billed at their maximum attorney rate of $150 per hour. The fee agreement allows me to bill the client 100% of those hours at a reduced rate of $100 per hour. What type of Split Template should I create?
There are 3 ways to accomplish this:
Bill the Client and Split 30% to the Insurance Company
- Assign a fee schedule for $150 per hour to the Insurance Company and a fee schedule for $100 per hour for the Client.
- When creating your Split Template, use the setting "Original Entry = Keep" and "Rate = Fee Schedule"
- Allocate 30% to the Insurance Company in the Split Details.
- When creating time entries, create them for the Client, then split using the template that allocates 30% to the Insurance Company. The template will use the correct rate as assigned in Fee Schedules.
Assign 100% to the Client and 30% to the Insurance Company, deleting the original entry.
- Assign a fee schedule for $150 per hour to the Insurance Company and a fee schedule for $100 per hour for the Client.
- When creating your Split Template, use the setting "Original Entry = Split" and "Rate = Fee Schedule"
- Allocate 100% to the Client and 30% to the Insurance Company in the Split Details.
- When creating time entries, create them for either the Client or the Insurance Company, then split using the template that allocates 100% to the client and 30% to the Insurance Company. The template will use the correct rate as assigned in Fee Schedules and will delete the original entry, leaving 2 separate entries.
Assign 100% to the Client and 30% to the Insurance Company, retaining the original entry.
- When creating time entries, create them for either the Client or the Insurance Company or for a totally separate master matter, then split using the template that allocates 100% to the client and 30% to the Insurance Company. The template will use the correct rate as assigned in Fee Schedules. Two separate entries will be created and the original entry for 0% will remain for audit purposes.
I need to split an entry - but I want the split entries to show the full number of hours from the original entry.
There are 2 ways to do this:
Keep the Hours from the original entry in the Hours field.
When creating the template select "Hours = Keep" to keep the hours from the original entry on the split-to entries.
Show the original hours in the Narrative or the Bill Note.
Append or Prepend text to the Narrative or Bill Note as follows:
The original hours on this entry are <OH>
<OH> is a Token for Original Hours and the system will populate the field with the correct details when split. See Time Entry Split Designer for a complete list of tokens.
